About the Speech Chick

Here's the page where you get to know the chick behind Speech Chick.  I am a wife to a great guy and a mom to 2 busy kids.  I received my Bachelor's Degree from University of Texas at Dallas and my Master's from Texas Woman's University.  I worked as a SLP-assistant and SLP in the school districts for 7 years before I started working in home health.  I always had it on my mind that I would like to be in business for myself eventually.  That's kind of everyone's dream right...be your own boss.  In October 2010, I started Speech Chick Therapy and never looked back.  I enjoy calling my own shots and doing what is best for each of my clients.  I like to keep my practice small enough so that's it just me that I (the boss) am accountable for.  I feel like when you grow a big company, you loose touch with why you started it.

I started this blog a couple of years ago but did not stay with it.  It was my very first blog and I was WAY inexperienced!!  But now, I've figured some things out through my other "funsy, craftsy, momma" blog.  So that means this professional one should be awesome, right?!  I have 2 reasons for writing this blog.  I see many of my clients in a daycare or private school setting.  I don't always get a chance to explain the logic behind the activities we do.  This is my way of keeping parents in the loop and explaining our activities.  The second reason is to share my activities with other SLPs that work with children.  There are many blogs out there written by school based SLPs which are great!  But I am home health so my job is to work towards functional communication in the home.  When I was in the schools, it was more education based.  I worked with teachers to follow their curriculums.  Home based SLPs work with the main goal of helping the child (and the family) in the home.

I hope my blog helps you either 1. understand your child's work that day or 2. gives you an idea to use in your own therapy sessions.

Peace, Love and Speech!!
Melissa
